Quality Is Everyone’s Responsibility: Yanyan Huang on the Future of Food Safety [Speaker Spotlight]

With more than 20 years of experience in quality and food safety, Yanyan has built her career around the belief that doing her job well means helping protect millions of lives every day. Today, as Global Vice President of Quality and Food Safety at ADM, she leads the organization’s global efforts to protect public health, earn customer trust, and enable sustainable business growth. Her approach combines customer-centricity with data-driven decision-making and digital technologies, including in-process quality control, electronic quality management systems, and advanced analytics, to modernize quality systems and strengthen food safety across global operations.

You've spent much of your career focused on risk assessment and mitigation. How has the concept of risk evolved in food manufacturing over the past decade?

Risk is a moving target in Quality and Food Safety. Over the past decade, risk has evolved beyond traditional manufacturing hazards to include changing regulatory requirements, increasing supply chain complexity, and shifting consumer expectations. At the same time, advances in detection technology continue to lower detection limits, allowing us to identify risks that were previously invisible. As our ability to detect improves, our definition of risk evolves as well. That's why successful food safety organizations must be proactive, data-driven, and continuously adapting to an ever-changing risk landscape while staying focused on the ultimate goal—protecting public health.

 

What opportunities exist today to leverage data that many food manufacturers are still overlooking?  

Image (81)One of the biggest opportunities is breaking down data silos. Quality and Food Safety is a shared responsibility—critical data resides across Operations, Research & Development, Procurement, Supply Chain, and Suppliers, but it is often fragmented across different systems and teams. By connecting operational, supplier, laboratory, and customer data, companies can gain a much better understanding of risk, identify trends earlier, and make more proactive decisions. The real value isn't collecting more data—it's integrating existing data to create actionable insights.

 

What role will artificial intelligence play in the future of quality and food safety management? What are the greatest challenges in building global quality systems that people actually embrace and adopt?

AI will be a powerful tool, but not a replacement for human judgement. Today, the challenge isn't a lack of information—it's that we have too much data and too much information. The real opportunity is using AI to help connect the dots, identify patterns, and turn data into a meaningful story. AI can accelerate literature reviews, monitor fragmented regulatory requirements, and analyze data across operations, suppliers, research & development, laboratories, and customers. But ultimately, humans must humanize AI. Food safety professionals need to apply critical thinking, context, and experience to interpret the data, challenge assumptions, and make the right decisions.

 

What are the greatest challenges in building global quality systems that people actually embrace and adopt?

ADM has one of the most diverse portfolios I've worked with, spanning everything from agricultural processing to food ingredients and biotics. The biggest challenge in building a global quality system is finding the right balance between global consistency and business-specific needs. The key is to standardize where it creates value and consistency, while allowing flexibility where it addresses unique risks. When you get that balance right, people are much more likely to embrace and adopt the system. I've found that adoption comes when people see success and feel their voice is heard. When teams help shape the solution and see how it improves performance, reduces risk, and better serves customers, they embrace it as their system—not just another corporate requirement.

 

How do you ensure quality remains a shared organizational responsibility rather than being perceived as the responsibility of one department?

Quality means different things to different people.

  • For frontline employees: it's making a safe product they can be proud of and ensuring it reaches consumers without causing harm.
  • For supervisors: it's reducing rework, downtime, complaints, and firefighting.
  • For operations: it’s consistency, efficiency, and reliable performance.
  • For leaders: it's protecting consumers, earning customer trust, growing the business, and supporting long-term job security.

When people see how quality helps them succeed in their own roles—and how their work impacts millions of families including their own every day— quality becomes everyone's responsibility.

 

What conversations are you most looking forward to having with fellow manufacturing and food safety leaders at the American Food Manufacturing Summit?

I'm looking forward to benchmarking, sharing best practices, and learning from real-world case studies with fellow leaders. Despite decades of progress, foodborne illness rates have not meaningfully changed as much as any of us would like. That tells me we still have work to do as an industry. I've always believed that food safety is not a competitive advantage — it's a shared responsibility — from the farmer growing the crop, to the manufacturer producing the consumable goods, to the distributor moving the product, and ultimately to the consumer handling and preparing the food. No single company can solve this alone. We succeed together or fail together. By openly sharing lessons learned, innovations, and challenges, we have a better chance of moving the needle and making a meaningful impact on public health.
