Introduce yourself and describe your role and responsibilities as the Chief Operating Officer, MENA at JBS Foods, and your journey into the manufacturing world.

As the Chief Operating Officer (COO) for the MENA region at JBS Foods, my primary responsibility revolves around overseeing the manufacturing and supply chain functions. This role is pivotal in ensuring that we maintain the highest standards of safety, quality, and efficiency across our operations. My journey into the manufacturing world has been both comprehensive and dynamic.

I hold a PhD in Food Microbiology, which provided a strong foundation in food safety and quality management. Early in my career, I delved into various aspects of quality control and assurance, which laid the groundwork for my expertise in these critical areas. Over the years, I have gained extensive experience in optimizing manufacturing processes, implementing cutting-edge technology, and leading initiatives that drive continuous improvement.

At JBS Foods, my role involves not only overseeing day-to-day operations but also steering strategic initiatives aimed at enhancing our production capabilities. One of my significant achievements has been the successful launch of several high-automation production lines. These lines have significantly boosted our operational efficiency and product safety, aligning with international quality standards.

Moreover, my involvement extends beyond the confines of JBS Foods. As an advisory board member in the academic field, I contribute to shaping the future of food technology education. This role allows me to leverage industry insights to influence educational programs and research, ensuring that the next generation of professionals is well-equipped to tackle the challenges of our evolving industry.

How do you balance rapid change with maintaining operational continuity during the early transformation phases?

Balancing rapid change with maintaining operational continuity is a nuanced challenge, particularly during the early phases of transformation. The first step involves aligning the organization's culture and values with the vision and strategy for change. This means embedding the principles of the change into everyday actions and behaviors, ensuring that our culture supports the change goals and vice versa.

To effectively manage this balance, it is crucial to leverage existing resources and avoid unnecessary waste or duplication. Utilizing current assets efficiently helps maintain operational continuity while facilitating transformation. This involves a meticulous assessment of existing processes, resources, and personnel to ensure that they are aligned with the new objectives.

Progress must be measured against predefined criteria and indicators. Setting clear metrics for success allows us to track performance and results accurately. Regularly reviewing these metrics provides insight into how well the transformation is progressing and where adjustments may be needed. This approach not only helps in maintaining operational stability but also ensures that the transformation is on track and aligned with strategic goals.

How do you manage employee resistance to change in traditional manufacturing settings with deeply ingrained processes?

Managing employee resistance to change, especially in traditional manufacturing settings with entrenched processes, requires a strategic approach centered around effective communication. Transparent and ongoing communication is key to alleviating concerns and fostering a positive outlook toward change.

Initiating change involves clearly explaining the reasons behind it, the benefits it brings, and how it aligns with the company's long-term objectives. Employees need to understand not only the 'what' but also the 'why' behind the changes. This clarity helps in addressing uncertainties and building trust.

It's also essential to highlight how the changes will positively impact employees' roles and job security. By demonstrating the tangible benefits and addressing potential concerns proactively, we can mitigate resistance and foster a more receptive environment for change. Engaging employees in the change process and seeking their input can further enhance their buy-in and support.

What specific skills and tools do you believe are essential for leaders to effectively guide their teams through periods of transformation?

Leaders guiding their teams through periods of transformation require a diverse set of skills and tools to navigate the complexities of change effectively. Key among these are strong communication skills, a growth mindset, and the ability to coach and mentor.

Effective communication is crucial in articulating the vision for change, addressing concerns, and keeping the team informed throughout the process. A growth mindset enables leaders to remain adaptable, embrace new challenges, and inspire their teams to view change as an opportunity for growth rather than a threat.

Coaching is another essential skill. It involves supporting and guiding team members through the transformation process, helping them develop new skills, and fostering a culture of continuous learning. Leaders who excel in coaching can build stronger, more resilient teams capable of navigating the challenges of transformation with confidence.

How do you integrate change management across departments and levels to ensure a cohesive transformation?

Integrating change management across departments and levels requires a strategic approach that ensures coherence and alignment throughout the organization. The first step is to assess the readiness of existing partners and stakeholders for the change. This involves understanding their current state, identifying potential challenges, and preparing them for the upcoming transformation.

Once readiness is assessed, it is important to clearly communicate the objectives behind the change. This clarity helps in aligning departmental goals and activities with the overarching transformation strategy. Cross-departmental collaboration and open lines of communication are vital to ensure that everyone is working towards the same objectives and that any issues are addressed promptly.

Regular updates and feedback loops help in maintaining alignment and ensuring that the change management efforts are cohesive. By fostering a collaborative environment and maintaining transparency, we can effectively manage change across various levels and departments, ensuring a smooth and unified transformation process.

How do you handle setbacks during change initiatives, and what strategies do you use to regain momentum and confidence among your team?

Handling setbacks during change initiatives requires a balanced approach that addresses both the practical and emotional aspects of the situation. Ignoring the emotional impact of setbacks can undermine morale and hinder progress, so it is important to acknowledge and address these emotions openly.

Maintaining a positive mindset is crucial. This involves focusing on solutions rather than dwelling on problems and encouraging the team to view setbacks as learning opportunities. Reflecting on what went wrong and how to prevent similar issues in the future can help in regaining momentum and confidence.

Learning from mistakes and adapting strategies accordingly is essential for overcoming setbacks. By analyzing the root causes of issues and implementing corrective measures, we can improve our approach and ensure that the transformation process continues to move forward effectively.
