With more than three decades across the Chrysler Corporation, DaimlerChrysler, FCA, and now Stellantis, Shawn has witnessed and helped lead the industry's transformation firsthand. From navigating increasingly complex vehicle programs to embracing emerging technologies such as AI, she has remained focused on building manufacturing organizations that are flexible, resilient, innovative, and people-centered.
Ahead of her participation in the Women in Leadership panel on Day 2 of the American Automotive Summit, we had the opportunity to gain Shawn's perspective on the evolution of automotive manufacturing, the future impact of AI, effective engineering and manufacturing collaboration, and what it takes to lead through an era of unprecedented change.
You've spent nearly three decades with the same automotive family — from Chrysler Corporation through DaimlerChrysler, FCA, and now Stellantis. What's kept you energized and growing within that organization for so long, and how has your leadership philosophy evolved along with the company?
Early in my career, I focused primarily on technical aspects, process discipline, and operational execution. As my responsibilities expanded, I learned that lasting success comes from empowering people, fostering collaboration, and creating a culture where everyone feels accountable for results and continuous improvement. Today, I view leadership not only as delivering performance, but also as developing future leaders, driving innovation, and helping teams navigate change with confidence. The company has transformed significantly over the years, and so has my commitment to integrity, continuous improvement, and servant leadership.
The automotive industry continues to face geopolitical uncertainty, supply chain volatility, and changing consumer expectations. Which challenge do you believe deserves the industry's greatest attention today?
For me, the challenge that deserves the industry's greatest attention is managing the rapid pace of technological transformation while maintaining resilient and flexible manufacturing operations. As the industry simultaneously navigates electrification, software-defined vehicles, evolving supply chains, and changing customer expectations, success will depend on how quickly organizations can adapt their processes, workforce capabilities, and manufacturing systems.
From a manufacturing perspective, supply chain volatility will remain a concern, but the broader long-term challenge is building the agility to respond to
constant change. Vehicle programs are becoming more complex, product lifecycles are evolving faster, and customers expect both advanced technology and flawless quality. The companies that thrive will be those that can industrialize new technologies efficiently while maintaining operational excellence and cost competitiveness.
As a leader in Vehicle Process Engineering, I believe my responsibility is to create manufacturing systems that are flexible, scalable, and people-centered. Technology will continue to evolve, but our ability to develop talent, foster innovation, and execute with discipline will determine how successfully we navigate the future. Ultimately, the industry's greatest opportunity is not simply adapting to change—it's building organizations that are capable of leading it
Which emerging technology do you think will have the greatest impact on the industry?
I would say that Artificial Intelligence will have the greatest impact on the automotive industry over the next decade—not only in the vehicle itself, but throughout the entire value chain from product development to manufacturing and customer experience. While AI is no longer an emerging technology, we are still in the early stages of realizing its full potential.
The key challenge will be ensuring that AI complements people rather than replaces them. The companies that gain the greatest advantage will be those that combine advanced technology with a highly skilled workforce, strong leadership, and a culture of continuous improvement. While AI can identify patterns and opportunities at scale, it is the expertise of engineers, operators, and manufacturing teams that turns those insights into meaningful actions and results.
In my view, AI's greatest value is not automation alone—it's empowering people with better insights, better decisions, and the ability to innovate faster than ever before.
What does successful collaboration between engineering and manufacturing look like?
In my experience, the best results come when manufacturing is engaged early in the product development process rather than after designs are finalized. Open communication, mutual respect, and a willingness to challenge assumptions help teams identify issues sooner, reduce launch risk, and accelerate problem solving.
Successful collaboration also requires shared accountability. Instead of engineering owning the design and manufacturing owning the build, both organizations work together to balance product performance, manufacturability, quality, cost, and timing. When teams are aligned around the customer and empowered to make decisions together, they can achieve outcomes that neither organization could deliver independently.
Ultimately, great collaboration is about trust. When engineering and manufacturing operate as one team, innovation reaches the plant floor faster, launches are more successful, and the entire organization is better positioned to compete in a rapidly changing industry.
Why is it important for automotive experts and industry leaders to gather at forums like the American Automotive Summit?
I believe forums like the American Automotive Summit are more important today than ever because no single company has all the answers to the challenges facing our industry. Bringing together leaders from engineering, manufacturing, supply chain, technology, and operations creates an opportunity to share best practices, learn from each other's experiences, and discuss solutions to common challenges.
These forums help build relationships. The automotive industry has always been driven by talented people, so creating opportunities to connect, challenge each other's thinking, and learn from diverse perspectives ultimately helps all of us advance the industry.
What are you hoping for attendees to take away from the Women in Leadership panel that you will be participating in?
What I hope attendees take away from the Women in Leadership panel is that leadership is not defined by a title—it's defined by the impact you have on people, teams, and organizations. Throughout my career, I've learned that the most effective leaders create opportunities for others to grow, foster an inclusive environment where diverse perspectives are valued, and lead with authenticity.
I also hope attendees recognize that careers are rarely linear. Growth often comes from embracing new challenges, stepping outside your comfort zone, and being willing to continuously learn and adapt. The automotive industry is evolving rapidly, and leadership today requires resilience, curiosity, and the ability to lead through change.
Most importantly, I hope people leave inspired to invest in themselves and in others. The success I've experienced throughout my career has been shaped by great mentors, strong teams, and leaders who believed in me. If we want to build the next generation of leaders, we have a responsibility to create those same opportunities for others. That's how we strengthen our organizations, our industry, and our future.
