Introduction

What if the next great automotive differentiator isn’t what happens under the hood, but what happens inside the cabin? For [Marinela Cirstea](https://www.linkedin.com/in/marinela-cirstea/), President at [Leggett Dynamics](https://leggett.com/), the answer lies in recognizing that the vehicle is evolving from a means of transportation into an extension of how people live, work, relax, and connect. With consumers increasingly expecting personalized and seamless experiences wherever they are, comfort and motion are taking on a new significance by becoming integral elements of how a vehicle is perceived and experienced.

At [Leggett Dynamics](https://leggett.com/), Marinela leads a global business dedicated to helping customers navigate this changing mobility landscape, bringing together automotive expertise, engineering, ergonomics, manufacturing, software, and innovation to develop solutions around the human experience. Drawing on Leggett’s long-standing heritage in engineering comfort, she is focused on translating that expertise into what comes next for mobility. At the 2026 [American Automotive Summit](https://usautosummit.com/), Marinela explored this evolution during the Day 2 fireside chat, “Redefining the In-Cabin Experience: Driving the Evolution of Software-Defined Comfort,” examining how software, hardware and human-centered thinking are converging to create an entirely new dimension of the automotive experience.

**Looking back over your career, what has been the most transformative change you've witnessed in the automotive industry?**

<https://leggett.com/>

The most transformative change has been the shift from the vehicle as transportation to the vehicle as an experience. We don’t just travel in vehicles anymore. We do life in them.

Historically, automakers competed on horsepower and exterior design. Today, consumer expectations are evolving quickly. People expect vehicles to be a personalized, seamless extension of their digitally-connected life, blurring the lines between their vehicle and their homes, offices, and places where they relax and recharge.

That changes how we think about the cabin. Comfort and motion are no longer just features; they help define the overall user experience. This is where I believe the next phase of innovation will happen at the intersection of hardware, software, ergonomics, and human-centered design.

**What skills will define the next generation of automotive leaders?**

The next generation of automotive leaders will need to be adaptive, curious, and deeply collaborative. Technical capability will always matter, but the biggest challenges ahead are not only technical; they are also human challenges.

Leaders will need to connect across regions, functions, cultures, and generations. They will need to actively listen, build trust before influence, and make people feel valued. I also believe future leaders must be comfortable operating in ambiguity.

Our industry is moving quickly, so leadership is less about having every answer and more about asking questions, bringing the right people together, and creating an environment where teams can move fast, learn continuously, and help each other succeed.

**Supply chains have become increasingly interconnected and complex. What lessons has the industry learned over the past few years?**

*<https://leggett.com/>One major lesson is that efficiency, resilience, and innovation now have to work together.* For many years, the industry optimized for speed, cost, and highly integrated global supply chains. Those priorities still matter, but the past few years reminded automakers that the most successful supplier relationships cannot be purely transactional. OEMs need strategic partners who can help them anticipate what consumers want, translate that into advanced innovation, get it to market faster, and make it scalable and affordable.

That is why we are seeing more discussion around deeper supplier integration and co-development. Some in the industry refer to this as a “Tier 0.5” type of relationship, meaning suppliers are brought closer to the OEM strategy earlier, helping bridge the gap between traditional component supply and system-level innovation. But I see the bigger message as less about creating a new supplier title and more as a call to action across the entire supply chain.

Everyone in the value chain has to innovate across the board, not only in what we deliver, but in how we deliver it. When OEMs and suppliers work together earlier and more strategically, they can accelerate innovation, reduce complexity, build in value, and create experiences that help the OEM brand compete. For [Leggett Dynamics](https://leggett.com/), this reinforces the importance of close collaboration with our customers and our supplier-partners, local-for-local capability, manufacturing discipline, and innovation that delivers real value through change.

**What changes do you expect to see in global sourcing strategies?**

I believe there will be an ever-increasing emphasis on three things: innovation, value, and speed.

Cost, quality, delivery, and performance will always matter, but sourcing decisions are becoming more strategic. OEMs are increasingly looking for partners that can engage earlier, help solve complex challenges, accelerate innovation, reduce complexity, and bring scalable solutions to market faster.

At [Leggett Dynamics](https://leggett.com/), we have intentionally positioned ourselves to support this shift. Our global engineering and manufacturing footprint, combined with strong local-for-local capabilities, allows us to provide the scale customers need globally while remaining responsive to regional market requirements. We are investing in innovation across comfort systems, motion systems, software and integration, and innovation services to help customers create differentiated user experiences while improving value and speed to market.

We also expect our own supply partners to join us with bold ideas, relentless innovation and continuous improvement, competitive cost structures, speed, and manufacturing discipline. In return, we are committed to transparency, earlier collaboration, and opportunities to co-develop solutions that create value across the entire supply chain.

Ultimately, sourcing is becoming less about transactions and more about partnerships that translate into competitive advantage. The strongest partnerships will be built on shared commitment, complementary capabilities, and the confidence to innovate and grow together.

**What opportunities do you see emerging from today's industry challenges?**

Challenges often create the conditions for innovation. Right now, the industry is navigating cost pressure, platform consolidation, varied approaches to software-defined vehicles and electrification, supply chain complexity, and fast-changing consumer expectations.

But inside these challenges are very real and exciting opportunities.  We can consider it a call to action to reduce complexity, improve value, and create more meaningful user experiences.

For [Leggett Dynamics](https://leggett.com/), we see opportunity in helping OEMs turn comfort and motion into a competitive advantage with solutions that are intelligent, scalable, affordable, and aligned to the way people increasingly use vehicles as living, working, and entertainment spaces.

The future will reward companies that can innovate not only in what they deliver, but also in how they deliver it.

**What are you hoping for attendees to take away from your keynote session at this year’s summit?**

<https://www.linkedin.com/in/marinela-cirstea/>I hope attendees leave with the idea that leadership and innovation are both built through connection.

In automotive, we often talk about technology, platforms, and performance.  These are essential, but people are at the center of every transformation. The strongest leaders connect people to purpose, build trust, listen first, and help others succeed.

The strongest companies do the same with their customers. They listen, anticipate change, and co-create solutions that solve real needs.

My message is that the future of mobility will not be defined only by what vehicles can do, but by how they make people feel and experience life. Comfort, motion, and user experience will matter more than ever, and the companies that innovate fast, build-in value, and understand the human side of mobility will shape what comes next.

**Conclusion**

[Marinela Cirstea’s](https://www.linkedin.com/in/marinela-cirstea/) perspective offers a compelling reminder that the evolution of mobility is ultimately an evolution of the human experience. As vehicles become more connected, configurable and integrated into daily life, comfort and motion are becoming more intelligent, personalized and central to how an automotive brand is experienced.

Creating that experience will require more than adding new technology. It calls for a strong mechanical foundation, meaningful ergonomics insight, adaptable software and earlier collaboration across the value chain. As Marinela emphasized during the conversation, the opportunity is to standardize the platform while personalizing the experience.

For [Leggett Dynamics](https://leggett.com/), that is where more than 140 years of comfort expertise meets the future of mobility: helping customers translate human needs into scalable comfort and motion solutions that create meaningful differentiation.

As these conversations continue to shape the direction of the industry, the **[2027 American Automotive Summit](http://usautosummit.com)** will provide another platform for automotive executives and innovators to come together, exchange perspectives, and examine the ideas influencing the next chapter of mobility.
