### *Could you begin with a brief introduction about yourself, and an overview of your responsibilities as Global Head, Supply Chain Optimization Animal Health at Boehringer Ingelheim?*

[![Christopher-Gallwas-Global-Head-Supply-Chain-Optimization-Animal-Health-Boehringer-Ingelheim](https://blog.generisgp.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Christopher-Gallwas-Global-Head-Supply-Chain-Optimization-Animal-Health-Boehringer-Ingelheim.webp?width=333&height=333&name=Christopher-Gallwas-Global-Head-Supply-Chain-Optimization-Animal-Health-Boehringer-Ingelheim.webp)](https://supplychaineu.com/)I’m Christopher Gallwas, Global Head of Supply Chain Optimization for Animal Health at Boehringer Ingelheim.

My team works across process optimization and performance management, master data governance, knowledge management, trade channel development, and product portfolio management. Our purpose is to bring these capabilities together to improve how our global supply chain operates.

A major focus is turning data into better decisions. We are developing analytics, automation, and scalable digital solutions that increase transparency, reduce manual effort, and enable faster decision-making. Ultimately, my role is about connecting strategy, processes, technology, data, and people to improve service, resilience, and operational performance.

### *What Are the Most Significant Challenges Shaping Global Supply Chains?*

For me, one of the biggest challenges will be converting the enormous potential of AI into measurable operational value. It is relatively easy to launch pilots. It is much more difficult to integrate AI into business processes so that it genuinely improves decisions, service, efficiency, and resilience.

At the same time, supply chains manage sensitive product, supplier, customer, financial, and operational information. We need to unlock the benefits of AI without compromising data protection, intellectual property, compliance, or trust. Responsible AI governance therefore has to develop alongside the technology.

The third challenge is the speed of development itself. AI capabilities are evolving faster than traditional organizational structures, investment cycles, and learning models. We need to remain open and agile enough to adopt valuable innovations, while being disciplined enough to avoid fragmentation and technology for technology’s sake. At the same time, we need to be able to change perspectives, look up, and recognize external factors like geopolitical challenges.

### *How Can Digital Transformation Create Visibility, Resilience, and Agility?*

It starts with a trusted end-to-end data foundation. Demand, supply, product, inventory, and financial information need to be connected through consistent definitions and reliable master data. Without trust in the data, there will be no trust in the decision.

From there, organizations need to progress from visibility to prediction and ultimately to decision support. Understanding what happened is useful. Anticipating what may happen and identifying the appropriate response is where the greater value begins.

The final step is embedding those insights into operational processes. Our current S&OP Use Case, "ALICE," for example, is intended to bring demand, supply, product, and relevant financial information together within our existing S&OP process, enabling faster alignment and more integrated decision-making.

### *What Role Do AI, Automation, and Data-Driven Insights Play?*

Automation allows us to reduce repetitive effort, improve consistency, and free our people to focus on exceptions and higher-value activities.

Analytics creates the transparency to understand performance, recognize patterns, and detect risks or imbalances earlier. It provides the factual basis for better operational conversations.

AI then takes us further toward decision intelligence. It can support planning, pattern detection, exception management, scenario evaluation, simulation, and recommendations. The real opportunity is not merely to automate existing work, but to improve the quality and speed of the decisions behind it.

### *How Can Digitalization Improve Decisions Rather Than Simply Produce More Data?*

We need to start with the decision, not the technology. Before building a solution, we should be clear about which operational decision needs to improve, who makes it, and what problem stands in the way today.

The insight must then be integrated into the user’s workflow. If people have to search through multiple tools and dashboards to find it, we have probably created another source of information rather than a decision solution.

Finally, success must be measured in business terms. That could be better service, shorter lead times, optimized inventory, increased resilience, higher decision quality, or less manual effort. Our internal analytics strategy therefore emphasizes measurable value, business problems, user-centricity, and scalable solutions.

### *How Will Sustainability Influence Supply Chain Optimization?*

Sustainability is becoming part of the overall supply chain value equation. Decisions can no longer be optimized only for cost and service. We increasingly need to consider speed, resilience, risk, resource use, and environmental impact together.

This means sustainability must become visible within operational choices, including network, sourcing, inventory, transportation, packaging, portfolio, and supplier decisions. It needs to move from separate reporting into regular planning and decision-making.

Importantly, sustainability and performance do not always conflict. Better planning can reduce emergency transport, inventory optimization can reduce obsolescence, and more efficient flows can reduce cost and resource consumption. Our internal strategy consequently treats sustainability and compliance as guiding principles alongside measurable value and operational effectiveness.

### *How Can Leaders Prepare for Changing Demand, Regulations, and Geopolitical Uncertainty?*

Organizations need to strengthen scenario-based planning. We may not be able to predict the next disruption precisely, but we can simulate demand shifts, capacity constraints, supply interruptions, and different mitigation options in advance.

Resilience should also be differentiated. Not every product, market, supplier, or transportation lane requires the same protection. The appropriate response should depend on criticality, risk, lead time, and the availability of alternatives. Leaders need to prepare the organization for the mentioned new ways of working and further empower people.

When disruption occurs, decision speed becomes decisive. Trusted data, clear escalation paths, cross-functional governance, and defined decision rights allow the organization to respond coherently. Digital twins can support this by simulating end-to-end behavior, risks, and mitigation actions before decisions are executed.

### *What Role Do People and Culture Play in Digital Transformation?*

Digital transformation succeeds only when people understand the purpose of the change and trust the solutions they are expected to use. Adoption is not something that begins after implementation. It needs to be part of the design from the start.

Business teams should therefore be involved in defining the problem, developing the use case, and testing whether the output reflects operational reality. This creates both better solutions and stronger ownership.

We also need a culture of continuous learning. Our AI coordinator and AI Impact Facilitator activities illustrate this broader approach: building AI literacy, supporting responsible adoption, connecting business needs with technical expertise, and helping teams navigate both the opportunities and uncertainties of AI.

### *Which Technology, Capabilities, and Talent Will Create Future-Ready Supply Chains?*

[![imgi\_9\_Produktion Boehringer Ingelheim\_0](https://blog.generisgp.com/hs-fs/hubfs/imgi_9_Produktion%20Boehringer%20Ingelheim_0.jpg?width=474&height=316&name=imgi_9_Produktion%20Boehringer%20Ingelheim_0.jpg)](https://supplychaineu.com/)From a technology perspective, the foundation will be trusted and connected data, combined with predictive and prescriptive analytics, AI-supported simulation, and scalable automation.

Technology alone, however, will not be sufficient. Organizations need strong process ownership, data governance, scenario-planning capabilities, value management, and the ability to scale successful solutions across functions and locations.

The human element connects everything. Future supply chain professionals need to understand operations, work confidently with data and AI, collaborate across boundaries, and apply judgment where technology cannot capture the full context. We do not need every supply chain professional to become a data scientist. We need multidisciplinary teams that can convert technology into operational value.

### *Which aspect of the European Supply Chain Summit are you most looking forward to?*

I am looking forward to learning how other industries are moving from individual digital and AI pilots toward scalable operational value. The challenges may differ by industry, but the questions around visibility, resilience, and decision-making are often very similar.

I am equally interested in the difficult lessons: what did not scale, where adoption proved challenging, and how organizations balanced innovation with governance and responsible use.

Most of all, I look forward to practical exchanges that participants can translate into improvements in their own organizations. For me, the value of a summit lies not simply in hearing inspiring ideas, but in leaving with something that can be put into action.” The planned panel focuses on digital transformation, visibility, resilience, agility, automation, sustainability, talent, and changing demand and regulatory conditions.
