Innovation in healthcare is not only about developing new technologies - it is about creating solutions that can be scaled effectively to improve patient outcomes, enhance accessibility, and support the evolving needs of healthcare systems.

In our latest Speaker Spotlight, [Chad Malone](https://www.linkedin.com/in/chad-malone-m-d/), SVP, Global Head, Innovation Engineering at [Philips](https://www.philips.ie/healthcare), shares his perspective on building scalable innovation capabilities that translate emerging technologies into meaningful patient impact.

Chad explores how Philips is accelerating digital and AI transformation through rapid prototyping, platform-based development, and cross-functional collaboration. He also discusses the importance of modularity, reusability, and operational excellence in creating more agile product development approaches while supporting sustainability and supply chain goals.

Join Chad at the 13th annual [American Medical Device Summit](http://amdsummit.com), taking place October 26-27 in Chicago, IL. There he will share further insights into advancing patient care through innovation engineering and building the capabilities needed to bring next-generation solutions to market.

*Can you introduce yourself and share more about your career journey leading up to your current role as SVP, Global Head, Innovation Engineering at Philips?*

I'm a physician who has spent much of my career at the intersection of healthcare, technology, and innovation.
Over the years, I've had the opportunity to lead teams focused on transforming ambitious ideas into products
and solutions that improve patient outcomes and create meaningful business impacts.

Today, as SVP and Global Head of Innovation Engineering at Philips, I lead a global organization responsible for advancing innovation from concept to execution, combining systems engineering, software, AI, and product
development expertise to help deliver the next generation of health technology solutions.

What continues to inspire me is the opportunity to bring together exceptional talent, cutting-edge technology, and deep customer understanding to address some of healthcare's most significant challenges. While technologies such as AI are reshaping how we work and innovate, I firmly believe that our greatest differentiator will always be people.

As a leader, I place strong emphasis on developing individuals and strengthening durable skills such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, adaptability, and leadership. These human capabilities remain essential for driving innovation, building trust, and creating lasting impact, and they are skills that technology can augment, but never replace.

*How can companies balance automation with human oversight when deploying AI across end-to-end supply chain operations?*

Organizations achieve the greatest value from AI when they treat it as an enabler of better decisions rather than a substitute for human accountability. AI can analyze complex supply chain data, anticipate disruptions, and surface insights far more quickly than traditional approaches. However, successful deployment still depends on people to interpret those insights, understand the broader business and customer context, and make informed decisions when trade-offs arise.

In my view, the most resilient organizations invest not only in AI capabilities but also in the development of their people. As automation increases, durable human skills such as critical thinking, judgment, collaboration, adaptability, and leadership become even more important. These capabilities help teams balance efficiency with responsibility, ensure appropriate oversight, and build trust in AI-driven processes. Particularly in industries such as healthcare, where quality, compliance, and patient outcomes are paramount, the strongest results come from combining advanced technology with skilled and empowered professionals.

*Where are AI-driven insights having the greatest impact on product availability and manufacturing continuity?*

One of the most significant areas of impact is predictive visibility across increasingly complex supply networks. AI enables organizations to identify potential disruptions earlier, optimize inventory levels, improve supplier performance monitoring, and better anticipate fluctuations in demand. In manufacturing, AI-driven insights help improve equipment reliability, production planning, and resource allocation. Together, these capabilities enhance resilience and help ensure critical products remain available when customers and patients need them most.

*How is predictive AI changing the way organizations plan for demand, capacity, and operational risk?*

Predictive AI is fundamentally shifting organizations from reactive planning to proactive decision-making. Rather than relying solely on historical trends, companies can now incorporate real-time signals, market dynamics, and operational data to generate more accurate forecasts and identify emerging risks earlier.

This enables leaders to make faster, more informed decisions regarding capacity planning, inventory management, supplier strategies, and resource allocation. The result is greater agility and a stronger ability to respond to uncertainty while maintaining operational performance.

*How can organizations build a culture where analytics and continuous innovation become part of everyday decision-making?*

Culture starts with leadership. Leaders must demonstrate that data-driven decisions and continuous improvement are not special initiatives but core expectations. Organizations should invest not only in technology and analytics capabilities, but also in building the skills, confidence, and mindset required to use them effectively. Equally important is creating an environment where experimentation is encouraged, learning from failure is accepted, and cross-functional collaboration thrives. When teams see innovation directly connected to customer value and business outcomes, it becomes embedded in everyday work.

*What should leaders be investing in today to ensure their supply chains remain adaptable as technology and market conditions evolve?*

Leaders should focus on three areas: digital foundations, talent, and resilience. Strong digital platforms and high-quality data are essential for leveraging advanced analytics and AI effectively. Organizations must also invest in developing people who can combine technological expertise with business and operational understanding. Finally, resilience must be designed into the system through flexible supplier networks, scenario planning, and the ability to rapidly adapt to changing conditions. Those investments will position organizations to navigate uncertainty while continuing to innovate and grow

***What are you most looking forward to at the American Medical Device Summit?***

I am looking forward to hearing how others in the industry are approaching many of the same challenges we are all working through, especially around quality, automation, process control, and scaling manufacturing effectively. Events like this are valuable because they create opportunities to learn from peers, compare approaches, and share practical lessons that can benefit the broader industry. I also appreciate the chance to connect with others who are focused on building more capable and resilient manufacturing systems.
