Using AI-Based Vision and Acoustic Solutions: Q&A with Clear Intelligence

  • May 20, 2019

In May 2019, Clear Intelligence will present on the topic, Art of the Possible: Using AI-Based Vision & Acoustic Solutions at the American CIO & IT Summit 2019. Brian Murphy, Chief Innovation Officer at Clear Intelligence, will lead the session, examining the fundamentals of AI-based vision and acoustic solutions, its business value drivers, and industry insights on how companies are utilizing these solutions.

Generis Group spoke with Brian ahead of the American CIO & IT Summit 2019 to discuss his session, the benefits of AI-based vision and acoustic solutions, Clear Intelligence’s five-step DIDIT process, and the future of the IT industry.

Your session will focus on, Art of the Possible: Using AI-Based Vision & Acoustic Solutions. What is AI-based vision and acoustic solutions, and what is one key takeaway you want to leave those who attend your session with?
AI vision and acoustic solutions use deep learning to create models that can analyze pictures, video, and sounds to gain insights. For example, analyzing X-Ray to identify anomalies, analyzing sounds of operations to predict failure, and analyzing video to detect objects, situations, or conditions that the use case is looking for. The solutions use training material that is based on imagery or sounds to train AI models what to look for. The deep learning network then consumes this training data to build a model that can then be used for detection or prediction.

In our session at the American CIO & IT Summit 2019, we want those who attend our session to discover the art of the possible in this space, as well as the relative ease of solution development.

How are companies currently using AI-based vision and acoustic solutions? What are the benefits?
A number of key areas are around product and manufacturing quality issue identification, equipment inspection, worker safety, and intrusion detection. The benefit of AI-based vision and acoustic solutions is that it is a more effective and encompassing detection process. For worker safety and intrusion detections, it is driving to 100% compliance.

What is today’s modern IT professional thinking about? How does your business as a supplier address some of these needs?
Today’s IT professionals are thinking about how they can transform from the traditional IT role to one of creating new business opportunities through the application of technology. We typically employ our patented DIDIT (Discover – Ideate – Develop – Implement – Transform) Process and utilize tools such as design thinking to ensure that we not only identify the real problem our customers need to solve, but that we also create innovative approaches to solving the core problem and positively impacting their profit and loss (P&L).

Tell us about your 5 step DIDIT process. How does it aid in solving your client’s problems?
This process of DIDIT thinks about the client’s issue from start to finish. Before a solution is proposed, we ensure that we are working on the core problem, not the symptom, by tying it to the company’s P&L to ensure it will have the desired impact. We then use innovative thinking to ensure the way we solve the problem is efficient, effective, and has the highest chance of realization. Development and implementation use an agile approach combined with change management to get to value faster and with the highest quality possible. The transformation component is about ensuring we extract the targeted value, that we adapt the solution as the business adapts to its implementation, and that we continually optimize and ensure adoption is maintained and then re-enter the cycle as the business demands.

What does Clear Intelligence specialize in? What makes your company unique?
We specialize in cognitive solutions focused across the supply chain. Our uniqueness starts with a business first approach with a focus on business problems that impact P&L. We place impacting the customers P&L first, and then use technology as an enabler. Our goal is to develop and apply simple solutions to complex business problems that drive significant impact to the P&L of our clients. Our expertise in cognitive solutions as they apply to the whole supply chain, combined with our deep industry knowledge, enables us to develop effective solutions that work with a rapid time to value.

Where do you see the IT industry in the next 5-10 years?
We see the IT industry using AI to significantly change the consumer/customer experience, driving a faster and more transparent supply chain and transforming the way people experience and buy products.

Where do you see the role of the CIO in the next 5-10 years?
In the next 5-10 years, the role of the CIO will phase more into the role of a business innovator, helping the business create industry disruption and gain significant competitive advantage for their company. They will be more focused on the top line growth in terms of where they can make more of an impact.

What is one client case study that your company is most proud of?
The case study we are most proud of is the one we are currently in the process of working on. We are currently working for clients to use vision-based solutions to uncover and classify defects during manufacturing.
